If you want to look at pure equity, it should be against villain’s perceived open-raising range. However, that’s not the only factor that comes into play. Also think about your position and the players left to act as well. If a loose-passive calling station is likely to come along, you don’t need as much equity, but if an aggressive 3-bettor is left to act, you want a lot more equity and ideally hands that are fine with potentially playing in 3-bet pots.
